Online Filing FAQs

1.  I run a bureau, and require my client to sign a P35 declaration before I file their submission for them. Is there a report within IRIS PAYE-Master that I can send to my client which contains all of the details to be submitted, which my client can sign and return to me?

Yes. You can print the filing Summary before you submit your return and provide this for your clients to sign. Follow the instructions given in this guide until the ’Filing Summary’ is produced on screen. You can then print the summary and cancel the submission. The details that you have entered will be retained and can be used when you have the signed confirmation from your client.

2.  As a bureau, must I enter my internet filing user ID/password/etc into each data file that I wish to file Year-End returns for?

Yes. This must be manually entered in each data file in the Company details screen, ‘Internet Filing’ tab.  Currently there is no way to cascade the details into each data file.

3. I use AOL as my default internet browser and I am experiencing problems submitting my Year-End returns, why is this?

HMRC have advised that customers may experience difficulties filing online if they are using AOL – if you do experience difficulties you should try using a different browser eg Internet explorer when sending your returns. Please contact HMRC for further assistance on 0845 55 60 999.

4. I have a firewall and/or anti-virus software, will this affect my submission?

Firewalls may prevent access to secure sites including HMRC’s secure site for filing returns. There are two tests that you can perform to check that your firewall will not hinder the filing process:

  1. Enter https://secure.gateway.gov.uk in the internet browser. If this gives access to the HMRC Gateway, the firewall is not a problem.

  1. Enter https://secure.gateway.gov.uk/submission in the internet browser. The HMRC Gateway will return an XML error message that will include the text “Gateway”, “2002”, “fatal” and “The document does not contain the minimum required data”. If the error message does not display properly, it may be necessary to view the ‘View Source’ option in the browser. As long as the error is received, a live submission will be accepted despite the firewall.

For more information on using firewall software please contact your firewall software provider.

5. I am receiving Error 1046 - Please check user credentials when I submit my Year-End returns, what should I check?

  1. That you are able to log onto HMRC Gateway https://secure.gateway.gov.uk using the ‘User ID’ and ‘Password’ that you have entered in IRIS PAYE-Master
  2. That you have previously logged onto the HMRC website and activated your account
  3. That your tax reference and district number (in the ‘Company Details’ screen) are correct and match the details that HMRC have for you. Often Employers have the tax district number repeated in the tax reference field e.g. if the tax district is 123 and the reference is ABCDEF the reference may have been entered as 123ABCDEF
  4. If you have been advised that your tax district or reference has been changed during the tax year, please check that HMRC have updated their own records with this detail
  5. You have not entered your accounts office reference number in the tax district field

If you have checked all the above details and still receive the same error, we recommend you contact HMRC on 0845 60 55 999.
